Aquatic Invasive Plants

INVASIVE
Brazilian Elodea
Egeria densa
Appearance: Brazilian Elodea produces male and female flowers on separate plants; however, only male plants have been found so far in the United States.
Threats: Infestations form dense mats that block sunlight, hinder water flow, degrade water quality, and disrupt recreation.
Great Lakes Region: Recently located in St. Clair.1 , Michigan (2025). Also minimal in Illinois, Ohio, New York, Indiana and Pennsylvania.


INVASIVE
Carolina Fanwort
Cabomba caroliniana
Appearance: Carolina fanwort is a perennial aquatic plant with fan-shaped underwater leaves and small, notched floating leaves. It blooms solitary white to purplish flowers above water from late June to September in Michigan. Fruits are less than 7 mm and have three seeds.2
Threats: Stems are typically under 10 feet long but can grow up to 33 feet mats that reduce oxygen, alter pH, and choke out native vegetation.3
Great Lakes Region: Minimal in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York
INVASIVE
Curly-leaf Pondweed
Potamogeton crispus
Appearance: Curly-leaf pondweed is a rooted aquatic plant with wavy, serrated leaves and branching stems that range from green to reddish-brown. It can form surface mats but has no floating leaves. Flower stalks appear above water in June, looking reddish-brown but are actually green.4
Threats: Like many invasives, curly-leaf pondweed outcompetes native plants and lowers diversity. Its thick growth can restrict fish movement and interfere with recreation.5
Great Lakes Region: Wisconsin, Michigan, New, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio


INVASIVE
Eurasian Watermilfoil
Myriophyllum spicatum
Appearance: Eurasian watermilfoil is a submerged plant with feather-like whorled green leaves and reddish stems. It produces pink flower spikes with tiny yellow flowers. 6
Threat: Eurasian watermilfoil forms dense mats, spreads rapidly, blocks sunlight, and crowds out native plants vital for fish and wildlife.7
Great Lakes Region: Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania
INVASIVE
European Frog-bit
Hydrocharis morsus-ranae
Appearance: Leaves are round or heart-shaped, ½–2½ inches wide with spongy undersides. Flowers are small, white with three petals and a yellow center. The plant produces up to 150 turions, has unbranched, unanchored roots up to 12 inches long.8
Threat: European frog-bit forms dense surface mats in slow-moving waters, blocking boat traffic, impacting wildlife habitat, and reducing oxygen and light levels.9
Great Lakes Region: Mostly New York, Minimal in Michigan, Wisconsin (Northern), Ohio (Northern), Pennsylvania


INVASIVE
Hydrilla
Hydrilla verticillata
Appearance: This submersed perennial herb is rooted, with long stems that branch at the surface to form dense horizontal mats. Its small, pointed leaves grow in whorls of 4 to 8, have serrated edges, and may feature sharp teeth under the midrib.10
Threat: Hydrilla threatens native aquatic ecosystems by forming dense mats that block sunlight, disrupt native plants, and change the water’s ecology. Its invasion also hampers boating and fishing activities.11
Great Lakes Region: Mostly Pennsylvania; Minimal in Michigan, Ohio (southern), Illinois, Wisconsin, New York 12
INVASIVE
Invasive Water Primrose
Ludwigia grandifolia, L. hexapetala,
and L. peploides
Appearance: The flowers are a vivid yellow, with five petals measuring 7–24 mm long. They bloom from July through October and appear singly rather than in clusters.13
Threat: Water Primrose forms dense, fast-growing floating mats that can crowd out native aquatic plants and wetland grasses, lower dissolved oxygen and water pH, degrade habitat and water quality for wildlife, and increase sedimentation.14
Great Lakes Region: Mostly Illinois (Southern); minimal in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio15


INVASIVE
Parrot Feather
Myriophyllum aquaticum
Appearance: Parrot Feather grows in lakes and wetlands in sun or shade and is recognizable by its gray-green color with stems that may appear reddish up close. Though mostly submerged, its emergent stem tips show feathery, tightly whorled leaves.16
Threat: Thick parrot feather infestations create mosquito breeding habitat and degrade water quality as well as conditions for fish and other wildlife.17
Great Lakes Region: Minimal in New York, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Wisconsin. Confirmed in Michigan and successfully eradicated.18
INVASIVE
Starry Stonewort
Nitellopsis obtusa
Appearance: This plant has whorls of 4–6 blunt-tipped branchlets/leaves, produces star-shaped bulbils at the nodes (typically 3–6 mm wide), and can reach up to 33 inches in length.19
Threats: Starry stonewort forms dense lake mats that can greatly reduce native aquatic plant diversity. These thick growths can also hinder fish movement and spawning, restrict water flow, and interfere with recreation.20
Great Lakes Region: Michigan, New York, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Wisconsin.21


INVASIVE
Water Chestnut
Trapa natans
Appearance: Floating leaves are triangular to diamond-shaped with toothed edges, forming surface rosettes; stems are long, spongy, buoyant, and up to 16 ft. Small white four-petaled flowers bloom in mid-summer, and dark horned nuts develop underwater.22
Threats: Dense mats of vegetation block sunlight and suppress native plants, can deplete dissolved oxygen during decomposition (harming aquatic life and causing fish kills), create hazards for boating, fishing, and swimming, and rapidly outcompete native plants, disrupting ecosystems.23
Spread: Each plant produces up to 20 nuts (drupes) which contains one seed. Each seed can last up to 9 years in the soil before germinating, while most germinate within 2 years. Can spread by vegetation fragments as well.24

Water Clover
Marsilea quadrifolia
Appearance: Resembles a four-leaf clover, with smooth leaves that may float, submerge, or emerge. Grows up to 8 inches tall; thin green stalks each bear a single leaf.26
Threats: Forms dense, single-species stands that outcompete native aquatic plants. By adjusting the angle of its floating leaflets to maximize sunlight capture, it gains an additional competitive advantage.27

Water Hyacinth
Eichhornia crassipes
Appearance: Upright purple flowers in clusters with free-floating rosettes and round waxy leaves.
Threats: Chokes waterways, reducing dissolved oxygen (leading to fish kills), impeding recreational boating and fishing, and damaging water infrastructure.29
Spread: Each plant produces up to 20 nuts (drupes) which contains one seed. Each seed can last up to 9 years in the soil before germinating, while most germinate within 2 years. Can spread by vegetation fragments as well.

INVASIVE
Water Lettuce
Pistia stratiotes
Appearance: Resembles a floating head of lettuce, with thick, hairy, light-green leaves arranged in rosettes without stalks. 30
Threats: Highly invasive aquatic plant forming dense floating mats that choke waterways, block sunlight, and reduce oxygen levels, severely harming fish and native vegetation.31

INVASIVE – WATCH LIST
Water Soldier
Stratiotes aloides
Appearance: Stiff sharp serrated leaves that appear to be aloe or pineapples with small white flowers.
Threats: Forms dense mats that crowd out native species and reduce biodiversity. It may alter water chemistry and harm aquatic organisms, while also impeding recreation; its sharp edges can cut swimmers.32
Great Lakes Regions: None. Currently located in Ontario along the border of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
INVASIVE
Yellow Floating Heart
Nymphoides peltata
Appearance: Lily pad with scalloped edges and yellow flowers with 5 fringed petals.
Threats: Produces dense floating mats that can blanket shallow waters, hindering recreation, degrading fish and wildlife habitat, and blocking light for beneficial native plants.33
